Rumors Of A $99 Nexus Tablet Return, Along With Hardware Details
There were some rumors going around late last month of a couple new changes coming to ASUS and Google’s Nexus 7 tablet. First, there was supposed to be a hardware refreshed version in the works, and between the news of a new power management chip (requiring new software) and the 32GB Nexus 7, that’s actually sounding pretty confirmed. The other half of the rumor concerned a possible $99 Nexus tablet; that’s far more interesting, but it didn’t take long before ASUS spoke up and denied the rumors. Instead of that being the end of the story, the rumors keep coming, and today offer a few new details.
Once again, DigiTimes is the source of this rumor, attributed to contacts within Taiwan manufacturing concerns. Supposedly, the tablet would be a big change from the quad-core Nexus 7, instead being powered by a WonderMedia 8950. That’s a single-core SoC, running at a mere 800MHz.
Word of such drastically underpowered hardware has us unsure how seriously to take this rumor. While a $99 tablet could be a huge seller, that would only be the case if it’s not an absolute piece of crap, and when you’re flirting with such low-end hardware as we’re talking about here, that’s a serious risk to consider. It’s hard to believe that Google would sully the Nexus name by associating it with such a device.
